Lure of the Labyrinth

Lure of the Labyrinth:

(needs a review/reading)
In Lure of the Labyrinth, students are experiencing mathematics in a different way than they usually do in your classroom. But they are building strong connections that can be the basis for going further when you bring that experience into your classroom. That's why we think that playing the game first and then connecting that experience to your curriculum is the most powerful way to use the game and the materials in this guide.

The following clip is intentionally left set to original length for a reason. No explaining that.

Here's a wonderful list of literary terms, we'll use these just for discussion purposes and vocabulary building for now to keep it easy.

The fruit will bear later.

Literary terms such as these are important to understand for full textual comprehension and truly understand both the author and the content of work; how it was crafted and the skills displayed.

These are not only important for the literal Art of Reading, but as a bonus, these will be choices on tests such as the SAT and AP courses later down the road.

Doesn't do Mom a bit of harm to have a nice review either.  :)

Literature study is my all time favorite; and during these winter days (solstice was today) it can make the dark hours rich and cozy, snug and warm.

National Council for Teachers of English

Tonight, while reading thru the KISS Grammar Site, there were several mentions about NCTE.

NCTE is the National Council of Teaching English.  It's a rather big player in the intellectual arena of English education.  The mission of NCTE is:

The National Council of Teachers of English is devoted to improving the teaching and learning of English and the language arts at all levels of education. This mission statement was adopted  in 1990:
"The Council promotes the development of literacy, the use of language to construct personal and public worlds and to achieve full participation in society, through the learning and teaching of English and the related arts and sciences of language.“

I walked away understanding the fragmentation of English Arts as a "science."

Not a lot of agreement; no constitutional rights or wrongs in the outlay, progress or method.

This poses a problem for me.

The problem is that mastering skills in English Arts all depends on intended goal.  Is the goal one of learning to explore literature with a mixture of opinions; or is it a goal of mastering the skills to apply to testing?

Most parents who foresee in the future academic testing such as the AP or SAT as vital components of college entry will face this two-faced coin.

There is no agreement; there is no alignment, and a very palpable division of thought and approach.  It was interesting to stumble upon and leaves my mind wondering about it.

Last night I finished reading Harry Potter & the Socerer's Stone.

I was expecting more excitement but the book was okay.  My favorite part is when Voldemort let out this troll that was longer than a bus.  The troll came after Heimione but Harry and Ron saved her; and she was so grateful that she lied and said it was all her fault that she was trying to take down the troll herself, but that's not really what happened.
